Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter top candidate for surprise national team job
This would be unexpected.
Potter has been out of work since getting sacked by the Blues in April after a disastrous seven-months at Stamford Bridge where he won just 12 of his 31 games.
The 48-year-old remains highly-rated however and has not been short of job offers since, with Nice, Leicester City, Crystal Palace, Rangers and Lyon all linked, though he has snubbed all advances so far.
Manchester United have also been linked as pressure grows on Erik ten Hag, with incoming co-owner Jim Ratcliffe a huge fan of the former Brighton boss.
Now, another team is attempting to recruit Potter, though perhaps not one that many people would have expected: Sweden.
Rumours have been brewing that his is a top candidate for the national team job with current boss Janne Andersson stepping down at the end of the year after failing to qualify the country for Euro 2024.
And Swedish FA secretary general Andrea Mollerberg has confirmed as much, telling Swedish channel TV4: ‘You can say this, the list of names that have been sent to me or that I am reading, it is clear that he is part of that list.
‘We’ll see what we filter down and who is interested in this role.
‘You probably have to be passionate about wanting to be the national team coach, especially given that it is different from club football. You may have to be ready with certain parts.’
Potter has strong ties to the Scandinavian country, having had his breakthrough in management with Ostersunds, guiding them to three promotions in five years and winning the Swedish Cup in 2017.
He subsequently caught the attention of English clubs as Ostersunds embarked on a memorable Europa League campaign that included a 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates.
This earned him a move to Swansea and then Brighton where he established himself as a highly-rated young manager before making the ill-fated switch to Chelsea.
Whether Potter would be interested in the Sweden job or international management in general remains to be seen, with reports suggesting that he’s waiting for a Champions League club to approach him.
