The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is set to be given a gritty TV reboot after its struggles in the box office – and it’s going to divide audiences.

The franchise, based on the book by Stieg Larsson, has had Hollywood and foreign language adaptations, has had limited success on screen – with the 2011 film starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig receiving critical acclaim.

However, the new series aims to leave the original tales behind them in a controversial move – and will instead implant leading character Lisbeth Salander into a modern day setting.

According to Variety, this will mean new plots and characters, as well as a new location for the vengeful vigilante.

It’s not known when production will start on the show, or who will be cast in the series.

Andy Harries of Left Bank Pictures, home of Quiz, Outlander and Strike Back, will be executive producing the series.

The Girl With The Dragon tattoo series, known as the Millenium trilogy, was last seen on screen in 2018, with a total rebrand for Lisbeth and her brutal story.

The character was taken over by Claire Foy from Mara in one of her first major roles since The Crown, but was not well received.

Her series, The Girl In The Spiders’ Web, is the second in the trilogy, but failed to make back its $43million (£34.9million) budget at the box office.
