It’s May Day today and Animal Crossing: New Horizons has an unusual way of celebrating it, with a special maze island and unique prizes.
There have been a lot of free updates for Animal Crossing: New Horizons lately, including the art gallery and the ongoing Nature Day events, but today you get something else new: the May Day Tour.
Rather than maypoles and morris dancers, Animal Crossing’s version of May Day is inspired by Labour Day, although as Tom Nook himself admits the connection is tenuous at best.
You still get to explore a cool maze and get some nifty prizes though, so it’s all good.
How to get Animal Crossing: New Horizons May Day Tickets
Getting the tickets is very easy and, best of all, free. Just go along to Resident Services and talk to Tom Nook, who will offer you a brief bit of patter and then tell you to pick up the tickets at the airport.
Collect the tickets at the airport and, when you’re ready to fly, choose the ‘I’d like to fly’ option and you’ll be taken directly to the May Day island. You don’t have to do this straight away if you don’t want, but remember the tickets are only valid between 1 May and Thursday, 7 May.Animal Crossing: New Horizons – enjoy a free flight (pic: Metro)
How to solve the Animal Crossing: New Horizons May Day maze
When you get to the special island you’ll find out that it’s a giant maze and that all your tools and inventory contents have been left back at the airport.
The idea is to make it through the maze using only your wits and whatever tools and items you can pick up along the way, almost like a Metroidvania game.
The mazes are randomised, so everyone’s will be a little different, but the way the obstacles work are always the same. So bear the following in mind and you should be fine:
- Remember you can dig up shrubs with just your shovel.
- To remove a tree or destroy a rock with a shovel eat a piece of fruit first to get super strength.
- You can jump over the little square holes, but only by walking into them in a straight line.
- Worn axes are only enough to chop down one tree before they break.
How to get Rover’s suitcase in Animal Crossing: New Horizons
At the end of the maze you’ll meet Rover the cat, who will be familiar to anyone that’s played the previous Animal Crossing games, as he’s the character that used to help you set up your town right at the start.
He didn’t have that role in New Horizons though, so this is the first time he’s been seen, although he seems to hint that he’ll visit your island later.
Once you get to him he’ll give you a special suitcase that you can’t get anywhere else, as proof that you’ve completed the maze. The dodos will take it off you when you ask to fly home and then post it directly to your house.

Before you leave the island make sure you pick up the bell tokens as bonus prizes. These are trickier to get hold of, but in our maze it involved digging up some shrubs at the end of the maze and then walking right round the edge to back near the beginning.
There should be nine bell tokens in total, which you can then hand in at Nook’s Cranny for some free cash.
Going by what all the characters say you only get one May Day ticket and that’s it, but since the event goes on till the end of next week maybe there’ll be more on other days. But for now, getting Rover’s suitcase and the bell tokens is everything you can do.Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Rover makes his first apperance (pic: Metro)
