Napoli sporting director rules out January exit for Chelsea target Victor Osimhen
The pursuit of the prolific striker continues.
The 24-year-old has continued his fine form of last season into this campaign, scoring six goals in eight Serie A appearances, although he has now picked up a muscle injury which will keep him sidelined for a month.
After scoring 26 league goals last season, Osimhen attracted the attention of the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool, with both English clubs still reportedly keen on the Nigerian.
However, according to Meluso, there will be no move for the forward in January, despite him entering the last 18 months of his contract when 2024 begins.
‘No, no way. Absolutely not,’ said Meluso of January exits from the Serie A champions.
‘Our squad is very good and we feel relaxed. Of course we can improve it but it will discuss this topic later. We will certainly get together to understand how and whether to intervene.’
With Osimhen’s contract expiring in 2025, Napoli are keen to sign him up to a new deal, with Meluso confirming that talks are planned in the near future.
‘There will be a meeting between the President and Osimhen’s entourage over the next few weeks,’ said the sporting director. ‘It is part of the game and a little time is needed to think about it.’
Osimhen seems unlikely to still be at Napoli next season as huge bids will come in for him in 2024, but he said in a recent Twitch interview with Emiliano Viviano and Mario Balotelli that he is content where he is.
‘I am happy at Napoli,’ he said. ‘People don’t know how difficult it is to play in Serie A. From a tactical and physical point of view, it’s one of the most difficult leagues to play in.’
