*Warning: This post contains spoilers for Trying*
Trying has only just debuted on Apple TV+ today – but its star has confirmed that the adoption comedy has already been commissioned for a second series.
Esther Smith stars as Nicky in the new show, which follows her and her partner Jason’s (Rafe Spall) journey to become adoptive parents after learning they can’t conceive naturally.
As heartbreaking as it is hilarious, Trying tackles many important issues; from infertility, to adoption, mental health and toxic masculinity.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Esther confirms that the comedy-drama will be returning for a second series – but filming could be affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
‘Yeah, we’ve been commissioned for a second series!’ Esther tells us excitedly. ‘Which I’m really thrilled about.’
‘We should be starting in the summer, but who knows what the world’s going to be looking like.’
She continues: ‘So yes! There will be a second series. I just want to do it all over again, I could just keep doing it – theres’s so much scope!’Trying follows Nicky and Jason in their journey to become adoptive parents (Picture: Apple TV)
And, indeed, there is so much scope. From the intricacies of Nicky and Jason’s relationship (the show is perhaps at its greatest when analysing just what its like to be together with someone for so long you start to lose a sense of self), to the issues around their adoption applications, their differing families and even their well-to-do friends, Trying is a slice of British life that almost radiates sunshine, despite its serious topic manner.
Chief of all this, of course, is Nicky herself – the series; guiding light and a roll that seems to fit Esther like a glove.
‘It’s really rare to find a part that you’re instantly clicking with. I can resonate a lot with parts of her character, that felt like a really easy way in for me,’ Esther shared.
‘I think we’ve got a lot of similarities within us. It just felt instant.’Set in London, the series is as heartwarming as it is heartbreaking (Picture: Apple TV)
One of the most notable stars of the series, Esther aside, is Imelda Staunton – a bastion of British acting whose featured in everything from Harry Potter to Vera Drake and who will soon replace Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in the final season of The Crown .
In her role as a social worker assigned to Nicky and Jason’s case, the venerated actress shows off another side to herself completely – she’s a comic marvel . Esther reveals that sharing the screen with an acting icon was actually quite tough work .
‘I was very nervous! We have a couple of scenes when its just me and her and I was like, Esther, come on, hold it together,’ she told us. ‘To be acting oppsite her, I was just trying to absorb some of [the talent.]’

Ultimately, Esther says, working on Trying was a true joy – from exploring the delicate subjects on-screen, to her partnership with Rafe Spall.
‘it was such a lovely environment. I’ve got nothing but positives to say, it just feels important to get a story like this out there, I think.’
To be honest, we already can’t wait for series two.
Trying to available to stream now via Apple TV+.
