Will Midnight Sun finally get its release? (Picture: Summit)
We’re all sitting around waiting on… well, nothing thanks to lockdown, but for Twilight fans, author Stephenie Meyer has added some purpose and major excitement to the routine.
A cryptic countdown has cropped up on Meyer’s official website, leading to fans speculating that the long-anticipated Midnight Sun could be on its way.
Meyer – the writer behind the hugely successful Twilight series – had been writing the first Twilight book from the perspective of hot brooding vampire Edward Cullen, but halted the novel in 2008 after 12 unfinished chapters were leaked online.
And now that there’s a prominent countdown – due to expire at around 1.30pm UK time on Monday 4 May – ticking away on Stephenie’s website, fans believe that they may finally get the finished book over a decade on.
Twitter has been flooded with Twi-hards freaking out over the possibility of Midnight Sun getting a release next week, and it’s safe to say nobody is calm:

Stephenie previously said after the leak: ‘If I tried to write Midnight Sun now, in my current frame of mind, James would probably win and all the Cullens would die, which wouldn’t dovetail too well with the original story. In any case, I feel too sad about what has happened to continue working on Midnight Sun, and so it is on hold indefinitely.’
The chapters were posted to Meyer’s website, but she said she would pick up writing the book when everyone had forgotten about it… and we reckon 12 years will do just fine for that.
However, in 2015, she admitted she had a ‘literal flip the table moment’ when she saw the publication of Grey – the retelling of Fifty Shades Of Grey by EL James (itself a product of Twilight fan fiction) from Christian Grey’s perspective – so we won’t hold our breath.

Other fans are managing their expectations, and believe that Meyer is about to release a sequel to her sci-fi book The Host.
Meyer, 46, previously said that she envisioned the 2008 book as the first in a trilogy, and would call the subsequent books The Seeker and The Soul, but those novels have yet to surface.
Until next week, perhaps?
The Host – about a parasitic alien race called ‘Souls’ invading human hosts – was made into a film in 2013 starring Saoirse Ronan as Melanie Stryder, but received poor reviews.

Meanwhile, Stephenie’s books Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn – about a new kid at school, Bella Swan, falling for a vampire named Edward Cullen – sold 120 million copies worldwide were also made into movies, which made quite the splash at the box office.
The five movies of Twilight Saga – starring Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward – grossed over $3 billion (£2.3bn) at the box office and became a global phenomenon, and fans have been devastated since the saga ended in 2012.
So you can understand why Midnight Sun would be such a welcome gift.
