Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has confirmed Alexander Isak is likely to miss the next four matches through injury.

The Swedish striker limped out of the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat to former club Dortmund in the Champions League last Tuesday.

Newcastle’s worst fears were realised when scan results confirmed Isak had suffered a recurrence of a groin injury that had troubled him last season.

The Magpies area already struggling with injuries, with the likes of Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy and Sven Botman long-term absentees.

Howe has split playing time between Callum Wilson and Isak this term, but he will be forced to stick with Wilson until after the international break.

‘Alex Isak we hope will be back after the international break,’ said Howe.

‘I’m not expecting anyone back that we didn’t already have available for Wolves.’

Newcastle take on Manchester United in the Carabao Cup tomorrow night, in a repeat of last season’s final.

Sandro Tonali is unavailable after being placed on a ten-month ban for betting offences, while Elliot Anderson has a back injury.

Newcastle take on United, Arsenal, Dortmund and Bournemouth before the international break in mid-November.
