Ella Henderson glad she didn’t win The X Factor: ‘Leaving halfway helped me adjust to fame’

Ella Henderson has no regrets about her time on The X Factor and is grateful for the experience, but admits leaving halfway through the competition was a blessing in disguise.

The Ghost singer appeared as a contestant on the ninth series of The X Factor in 2012 alongside the likes of James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas.

It’s been almost 10 years since Ella, now 25, skyrocketed to fame and viewers were both surprised and disappointed that she didn’t win, instead finishing sixth place.

However, it worked in Ella’s favour as she told Metro.co.uk: ‘Coming off the show halfway through really helped me.

‘I was allowed to have that time to figure out what I was going to do next. There was definitely anticipation of what’s to come and I think, when I wrote Chapter One [her debut album], I was proud of what I did but I had no idea of the scope it was going to do what it did.

‘I just couldn’t believe that happened to me, a normal girl from Grimsby. It just doesn’t happen to people like me, it’s bizarre. I look back at it now and I’m so grateful for it. Nobody can prepare you for it, that experience is a wild ride and one that I can learn from.’

Ella added: ‘Without that show I wouldn’t be in the position I’m in and everybody has their own version of how they come into this industry and for me, that show absolutely changed my life. It was a crazy time but I was fortunate enough to be around the family that I have who kept me very grounded.’

The pop star, who has just released her new single Let’s Go Home Together with Tom Grennan, was just 16 when she appeared on ITV’s The X Factor.

‘I meet so many artists that are a similar age to me and they don’t get to say, well at 16 this happened to me. When you’ve had a taste of that success, it doesn’t scare you as much,’ she said.

Her debut album, Chapter One, boasts a bevy of mature songs including the smash hit lead single Ghost, and ballads such as Yours and Empire.

According to Ella, she’s always been wise beyond her years and it’s partly down to growing up with ‘boisterous’ older brothers.

She explained: ‘I’ve always had this level of being around people older than my age. With my songwriting I always write from experience and whether it’s something I’ve personally gone through or whether it’s someone around me who’s gone through something serious that I’ve witnessed. I draw from that emotion and write about it.

‘It’s always just been my therapy and getting things out. It’s strange because sometimes I’ll listen to songs from Chapter One and I’ll relate to it so much more as a 25-year-old going through love, heartbreak or life situations than I did back then. I think, how did I do that? It’s like I was my own psychic writing about my own future and what’s to happen.’

Don’t get her wrong – Ella is mature in many ways but laughed that she’s ‘still a 25-year-old with so much learning and growing to do as a person’.

‘I’m still on that journey now of getting to the place I want to be,’ she stated.

‘What happened with Chapter One and Ghost was absolutely incredible but I look back now and that could be my foundation, where can I go now? It’s exciting and I’ve never viewed my life in that way until the last two years.’

Ella admitted: ‘It just feels so good and freeing to be allowed who I am.’
