A former far-right Spanish political leader has been shot in the face in Madrid.

Alejo Vidal-Quadras was attacked in the centre of Spain’s capital city in the wealthy Salamanca area at around 1.30pm on Thursday.

Emergency services rushed to the 78-year-old’s aid in Núñez de Balboa street following the shocking incident.

A Civil Protection spokesperson said Mr Vidal-Quadras was conscious and has been rushed to the nearby Gregorio Marañón hospital.

Police are now hunting for two people who fled the scene on a motorbike, including the shooter who was wearing a black helmet.

Mr Vidal-Quadras was previously the head of the People’s Party in Catalonia from 1991-1996 and vice-president of the European Parliament from 2009-2014.

The gunshot hit the former MEP in the jaw and health officials in Madrid say it left an entry and exit hole, reports local news outlet La Vanguardia in Barcelona.

Witnesses described the attacker as a ‘young, small man’ who was wearing jeans and a dark coat.

A police cordon has put in place surrounding the area where the shooting happened, police said.

Hospital staff later told El Pais that Mr Vidal-Quadras is in a stable condition with a single gunshot wound to the jaw.

The People’s Party leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo called for a thorough police investigation.

Following his time with the European Parliament, the politician was elected provisional president of then newly-created far-right party Vox.

However, he resigned from the running for re-election as president in June 2014and later quit the party altogether in February 2015.

The current leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, said he understood that Mr Vidal-Quadras was ‘out of danger’ in hospital.

He said it was too early speculate about why Mr Vidal-Quadras had been assaulted.

Back in the UK, a 16-year-old boy died earlier this week after he was shot in Birmingham.
