Gary Neville slammed five ‘whinging’ Manchester United stars after conceding against Newcastle United in their humiliating Carabao Cup exit.

Newcastle eased to a 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Wednesday night to gain some revenge after their final defeat at Wembley last March.

United found themselves a goal down after 28 minutes with Miguel Almiron, off the bench early onto replace the injured Matt Targett, latching onto Tino Livramento’s pass to fire past Andre Onana.

Eight minutes later the hosts doubled their lead with Diogo Dalot failing to deal with the threat coming down his side with Lewis Hall volleying home his first goal for the club.

Leading to the goal, Newcastle were awarded a free kick on the halfway line with the surrounding United players protesting the decision.

Mason Mount, Casemiro, Hannibal Mejbri, Harry Maguire and Anthony Martial were the players in close proximity as Eddie Howe’s side took the free kick quickly, catching the opposition off-guard and scoring their second of the evening.

Speaking on commentary duty for Sky Sports, Neville said: ‘It’s a beautiful strike from Lewis Hall.

‘If we go back to the free-kick here, watch Manchester United when they give it away, watch them five players. Look at them.

‘They’re just sleeping, they’re complaining to the referee, whinging. And whilst they’re whinging, Newcastle are winning.’

United’s evening grew worse with Joe Willock adding a third in the second-half.

Midfielders Casemiro and Hannibal Mejbri, both handed starts on Wednesday, were booked inside half an hour with the Brazilian replaced at half-time by Sofyan Amrabat – who was also shown a yellow card.

Former United captain Neville was convinced 20-year-old Mejbri should have been sent off before half-time having committed another foul shortly after his booking.

‘Hannibal should be off,’ Neville said. ‘He’s lucky because the referee didn’t want to send him off. He’s got to be careful to say the least – he’s hanging in there by a thread.’
