Newcastle United are confident that Kieran Trippier will return in time for their Premier League clash against Chelsea next weekend.

The defender returned home after being granted permission to leave England’s camp due to a ‘personal matter’.

Trippier played 90 minutes in the 2-0 win against Malta at Wembley on Friday but did not travel to North Macedonia for Monday’s European Championship qualifier.

The 33-year-old has been in fine form for the Magpies this season, helping Eddie Howe’s side to seventh in the Premier League table and eight points off leaders Manchester City.

The Magpies take on a rejuvenated Chelsea at St James’ Park next weekend, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side looking to build on performances against Spurs and Manchester City in their last two fixtures.

‘Newcastle United can confirm that Kieran Trippier has returned home from the England squad due to a personal matter,’ a statement said.

‘Tripps played 90 minutes as the Three Lions defeated Malta 2-0 in a Euro 2024 qualifier at Wembley on Friday but will miss Monday’s trip to North Macedonia.’
