Paul Merson believes Chelsea are capable of getting a result against Manchester City off the back of their big win over Tottenham.

Chelsea ended Spurs’ unbeaten start to the Premier League season on Monday night in a carnage-filled, 4-1 victory in North London.

The result was massive for the Blues, moving them up into 10th and keeping Spurs behind City at the top of the table.

Now, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are preparing to host the Citizens on Sunday, and the odds are staked against them, having lost their last six meetings with Pep Guardiola’s team by a combined score of 10-0.

In fact, Chelsea’s last triumph over City was the 2021 Champions League final.

12 points may separate the two sides, but, after correctly predicting that they wouldn’t lose to Tottenham, Merson thinks Chelsea stand a good chance against the treble winners.

‘If Chelsea get a draw that’s a good result. But it’s not a free hit,’ the Arsenal legend told Sky Sports.

‘Playing in front of 38,000 at Stamford Bridge against the best team in the world, Chelsea fans turn up to win, not to make sure their team doesn’t get beaten by two or three.

‘When you play for big football clubs you’re expected to go out and win or give it a go. Chelsea win trophies.

‘Tottenham were going to have a go at Chelsea and that’s why I was bullish about them being able to get something. That plays into Chelsea’s hands.

‘Man City will be the same. Chelsea will cause them problems, no doubt about it, but Man City will cause major problems at the same time. It’s a game Man City know they have to play well to win.’

Though the Blues have struggled to get points on the board so far this season, their record against the ‘big’ teams is impressive, having beaten Spurs and drawn with Arsenal and Liverpool, in addition to beating high-flying Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
