Pep Guardiola praises Manchester United star Andre Onana for ‘incredible’ save to deny Erling Haaland
Despite his side getting battered in their own back yard, Onana was a standout performer for United at Old Trafford.
The under-fire Cameroonian has had an impressive week for his new side, which started with him saving a last minute penalty in a 1-0 win against Copenhagen on Wednesday.
City took a 1-0 lead into half-time after Erling Haaland’s converted penalty but Onana made a stunning save just before half-time to keep the scoreline exactly that for the interval.
Haaland had virtually the entire goal to aim for when he steamed through with a jumping header but Onana somehow kept the Norwegian’s header out with two fists.
Though Haaland did eventually get his second with a similar chance, Guardiola reflected on Onana’s save at full-time by praising the ‘incredible’ stop.
‘Erling had an incredible chance at the end of the first half and Onana makes an incredible save,’ said Guardiola.
Haaland was similarly impressed with Onana’s save, and said the former Inter Milan stopper was impressive throughout.
‘It was an incredible save right before the half time,’ said Haaland.
‘He did another fantastic save in the second half when I chipped it, he saved it with his head. It is what it is. We won.’
