Real Madrid have issued an statement in response to ‘categorically false’ reports that they have been tapping up Paris-Saint Germain’s Kylian Mbappe.

The 24-year-old France international, arguably the best striker in world football at the present moment, has long been linked with a transfer to the Spanish capital.

Mbappe has produced 224 goals and 99 assists across 273 games for PSG and helped France lift the World Cup in 2018.

His PSG contract is due to expire at the end of the season and it is thought that Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly held talks over a possible move for Mbappe in the last summer transfer window, although his preference was to join Arsenal.

It is also believed that Liverpool were in talks over a sensational loan move for the PSG superstar, while there was reported interest from Manchester United too.

But despite links to Premier League clubs, Mbappe has consistently attracted interest from Real Madrid, who have now put out a statement about the player.

‘In view of the information recently published by various media outlets regarding alleged negotiations between the player Kylian Mbappe and our club, Real Madrid C.F. would like to state that this information is categorically false and that no such negotiations have taken place with any player belonging to PSG,’ the club said.

Mbappe rejected an approach from Saudi club Al-Hilal this summer after PSG accepted a €300m (£259m) offer for him.

In August, Mbappe was reinstated to PSG’s first-team squad following ‘constructive’ talks with the club’s hierarchy.

He had been training away from Luis Enrique’s squad due to a fall-out with the club’s board over his future.
