Chelsea captain Reece James will not be in the starting XI when the Blues host Brentford on Saturday as he continues his battle to regain full fitness.

The 23-year-old has made just two Premier League appearances so far this season, starting against Liverpool on the opening day of the season and coming off the bench against Arsenal last week.

The England international missed a string of matches due to a hamstring problem and then suffered a setback as he neared a return to fitness earlier this month.

The full-back is fit enough to be involved and will be on the bench at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.

‘No he’s still not ready to start,’ Pochettino told a press conference on Friday. ‘I think he’s doing well, he was training really well. He’s really close, but at the moment for tomorrow, he’s still going to be on the bench.’

Summer signing Christopher Nkunku is also pushing to return to fitness after a serious knee injury in pre-season.

On the forward’s return, Pochettino said: ”Maybe after the international he will be involved. Maybe, but it’s not sure.’
