A British tourist has died while flying from the Falkland Islands to Chile with his wife.

The 59-year-old, who hasn’t been named, was travelling with Chilean airline LATAM to Punta Arenas on Saturday when he died.

Chilean police met the plane when it landed at Carlos Ibanez del Campo Airport – though it’s not thought that the man died as a result of a crime.

Diego Díaz, Deputy Commissioner of the specialist unit based in Punta Arenas, said: ‘On Saturday on the instructions of local prosecutors, detectives from the Punta Arenas Homicide Brigade went to Carlos Ibanez del Campo Airport after a British tourist aged 59 died inside a plane while it was travelling from the Falkland Islands to Punta Arenas before his connecting flight to Santiago.

‘The man’s wife was interviewed and said he had several underlying health issues.’

A post mortem is expected to take place today or tomorrow to determine his cause of death.
