A 12-year-old child opened fire at a primary school in Finland at the start of lessons.

Three children, also aged 12, were wounded at the Viertola primary school in the city of Vantaa, north of the capital, Helsinki.

Police were called to the school at 8.08am UK time to reports of shots being fired inside the building.

A suspect – who is also a minor – has since been detained by armed police at the scene.

The school has around 800 students from first to ninth grade, according to local reports.

Finnish broadcaster MTV Uutiset reported emergency services – including armed police officers – were at the scene.

Some of the children reportedly hid during the shooting, while others who had been contacted by their parents on mobile phones said they saw what happened.

‘The immediate danger is over,’ the Viertola school’s principal Sari Laasila said but declined to comment further on the incident.

A police spokesperson confirmed that all victims were taken to a hospital. Several ambulances remain at the scene.
