Five people including child killed in Boxing Day fire at guesthouse

A fire at a Romanian guesthouse this morning has killed five people, including a child, authorities said.

The country’s General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations said 26 people had been staying in the accommodation in Tohani, Prahova County, at the time of the blaze.

Emergency services set up search and rescue teams to find five missing people earlier today after being called out to the scene.

At around noon today (10am British time) they confirmed the deaths of the fourth and fifth victims.

It was not immediately clear whether the two were among the five missing who were the subject of the search.

The ages of the victims, including the child, have also not been confirmed.

The Romanian authorities said 18 people managed to escape the side before it was completely gutted by flames, with two being treated for burns.

Images from the scene show huge plumes of black smoke lit up by a fire that consumed the entire building.
