A Spanish court says Dani Alaves has deposited a bail of one million euros required for his release from prison and will also have to hand over his passports while appealing a rape conviction in Barcelona. Alves's release coincided with a protest outside the penitentiary by prison officers who have been demanding better conditions in recent weeks in jails in northeastern Catalonia following the killing of a prison cook by an inmate at another jail. Former Barcelona and Brazil defender Dani Alves was released from prison on Monday after posting a €1 million (£857,000) bail.

In February, Alves was sentenced to jail for four-and-a-half years in jail after being found guilty of raping a woman in a nightclub on December 31, 2022.

The 40-year-old has served about a quarter of his four-and-a-half-year sentence.

Alves has been ordered to relinquish both his Brazilian and Spanish passports meaning he is unable to leave Spain.

He must also appear before the court on a weekly basis. The court imposed a restraining order barring him from coming within 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) of the victim.
