Residents of Gaza have been told to leave their homes once again as Israel widens its offensive to take in a larger portion of the region.

The military has been distributing leaflets in the south – where many Palestinians travelled following warnings to evacuate the north in October – telling them to move closer to the Egyptian border or the sea.

Khan Younis, the second-largest city in Gaza, appears set to be the main target for the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), which says Hamas leaders are hiding there.

Israeli fighter jets bombed several targets moments after the temporary ceasefire in the war officially ended at 7am local time on Friday.

The 7am deadline was the agreed time at which hostilities would resume if there were no agreement for further hostage releases.

More than 178 people have been killed since the bombing restarted yesterday, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, and the Israeli military says it has struck more than 400 targets.

Sirens were also heard in parts of Israel yesterday, with rockets fired from Gaza intercepted.
