Two Premier League footballers were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of rape and assault.

The Sun report that both players are aged 19 and play for the same club.

It is said that one player was briefly interviewed by police at their club’s stadium on suspicion of assault and aiding and abetting a rape.

He was then allowed to leave the stadium before being formally arrested, spending the night in a police cell before being quizzed by detectives under caution.

The following day, his teammate was also arrested and questioned on suspicion of rape.

The police have since confirmed that the pair have been released on bail, with a spokesperson saying: ‘Officers have arrested two men following a report of a rape.

The report also adds that the alleged rape took place on Friday night and the alleged victim contacted officers hours later before filing a formal complaint.

It is not known whether the club has suspended their two players, but a spokesman for the unnamed team has said: ‘As the matter is now in the hands of the police, the football club will not be making further comment at this stage.’
