Wolves boss Gary O’Neil has dismissed speculation linking him with a shock move to Premier League giants Manchester United.

It was reported during the international break that United were admirers of O’Neil and keen to sound him out over a role in a coaching set-up at Old Trafford.

O’Neil spent almost two decades in the English game as a player, representing the likes of Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham and Bolton.

He has won many admirers since taking over at Molineux last summer, with Wolves climbing into the top-half of the Premier League after finishing 13th last season.

O’Neil says it is an ‘honour’ to be linked with a ‘special club’ like Manchester United but insists there is ‘no truth’ behind the rumours.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Wolves’ return fixture against local rivals Aston Villa on Saturday, O’Neil said: ‘There’s no truth to it and I don’t know where it came from.

‘Growing up, Liverpool and Man United felt like special clubs so it’s an honour to be linked, but all of my focus is here. I love it here.’

Asked whether he has had any contact with Manchester United, who are considering a summer overhaul, O’Neil added: ‘No, nothing at all. I was only made aware of it by our media team.’

O’Neil’s only managerial role before Wolves was with Bournemouth, where he initially took over as caretaker boss following Scott Parker’s dismissal.

His sacking by the Cherries, in June of last year, came as a surprise given O’Neil helped Bournemouth avoid relegation to the Championship.

O’Neil is not the only manager to be linked with Manchester United in recent weeks – Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter have both been named as potential replacements for under-fire boss Erik ten Hag.

United largely impressed in the Dutchman’s first season at Old Trafford but find themselves just sixth in the Premier League ahead of their return fixture against Brentford tomorrow.
