Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham AFC have secured back-to-back promotions and will now be playing in League One from next season.

The Welsh club secured promotion to English football’s third tier with a 6-0 win over Forest Green on Saturday, coupled with defeats for MK Dons and Barrow.

Wrexham have achieved successive promotions for the first time in their 159-year history and return to League One for this first time since 2005.

It is remarkable achievement given Wrexham spent 15 years outside of the Football League before last year’s promotion to League Two.

Wrexham have been widely followed since Hollywood superstars McElhenney and Reynolds took control of the club in 2021.

Public interest has only increased with their popular documentary Welcome to Wrexham – which follows the club on and off the pitch as they look to make the long journey up to the Premier League – with the series receiving critical acclaim.

Wrexham need to secure two more promotions to reach the top level of English football, a level they have never reached in their entire history to date.

Wrexham fans stormed the pitch at the Racecourse Ground in celebration as their promotion was confirmed.

Elliot Lee opened the scoring for Wrexham on Saturday and after a Forest Green own goal, Paul Mullin netted twice to give his side a 4-0 lead at half-time.

Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott also got on the scoresheet in the second half as the third-oldest professional football team in the world got the party started.
