Two 17-year-old boys have had a miraculous escape after crashing their car into a train.

The incident took place in the city of Baroota, near Port Pirie in South Australia, on Wednesday afternoon.

Their Mazda 3 was travelling on the Augusta Highway when it smashed into the famous Australian train The Ghan, that is often described as a ‘living legend’ for tourists.

It is understood that the vehicle rolled several times before finally coming to a stop.

Pictures show the car all mangled, resembling a twisted sculpture of metal, glass, and plastic.

Fortunately, the driver and the passenger only suffered minor injuries despite the direct crash with a speeding train.

Both were seen being loaded onto an ambulance on stretchers before they were transported to hospital where they are recovering.

The train came to a stop a short distance from the scene of the collision, and none of the passengers were injured.

After swapping to another locomotive, it was able to continue its journey to the city of Darwin.

Police are investigating the crash at the level crossing on Park Road, as reported by The Advertiser
